Key Points From the Ministry of Health’s Virtual Media Conference – Monday 14th September 2020

  • Technical Director of Epidemiology at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Avery Hinds, stated that the capacity of the Clinical system is now at 38-39% and the Quarantine Facilities utilized for repatriation are at 50% capacity.
  • Dr. Hinds also revealed statistics that show that COVID-19 related fatalities have been predominantly males in the over 60 age bracket. He also displayed the daily COVID-19 figures which show a trend that the measures that have been implemented have taken some sort of effect as the daily figures have decreased.
  • Dr. Hinds also revealed that, compared to recent years, in the past few months there hasn’t been a higher than average incidence of Pneumonia related deaths.
  • County Medical Officer of Health for Caroni, Dr Jeanine St Bernard, listed COVID-19 symptoms that indicate that a patient’s condition is deteriorating, these include: shortness of breath, head-aches, dizziness, drowsiness, increasing fatigue, chills, chest pain or discomfort and fever. Patients at home who experience any of these symptoms are strongly advised to communicate it to the health officials monitoring them. Dr. Bernard also indicated that patients sometime downplay their symptoms to avoid hospitalization, she declared that this is a dangerous practice and should be avoided.
  • Dr. St Bernard stated that COVID-19 patients at home should only have ONE carer and that person should be healthy without any existing conditions. She said that the patients should also not roam and wonder around the house, they should stick to one area as much as possible. She went on to say that patients should also wear masks when in proximity with other people, observe proper hygiene and sanitization and not entertain visitors.
